Ian's Story
Albany patients come from all walks of life. Some come in their teens. Many make their first visit after retirement. Often the trigger to come has been separation from a spouse through death or divorce. It is usually a move that they have been contemplating for years. Ian is typical. He first attended May 2000 aged 49.
Ian first felt feminine at about the age of five years. Playing with other boys at school he put a skirt on and suddenly felt “right”.
Ian has a sister 2 years older who lives in Switzerland. They do not get on. His mother died in 1987 at the age of 75. His father also died in 1987 at the age of 80.
Ian used to borrow his mother and sisters underwear. He always felt at peace wearing women’s clothes. Cross dressing has been a big part of his life since then. As a teenage boy Ian enjoyed looking at pictures of naked women, but only out of envy! He wanted a body the same. As a teenager he “found religion”. He would pray desperately that God would change his body shape.
They felt perfect. He experimented with patches and creams. Then he decided he would go about this in a professional manner, he came to the Albany Clinic
All new patients see a councillor and their past medical and social history is explored. They have a full medical assessment with the doctor who is a specialist in male to female transsexualism. They also have a full blood analysis. The doctor was alarmed to find two large masses in Ian’s abdomen. Also his blood pressure was raised. Reassuringly his blood investigations were normal.
Further investigation revealed that the masses in Ian’s abdomen were enlarged kidneys. He has a condition of poly cystic kidneys. If neglected this can lead to kidney damage and premature death. Fortunately Ian is now under the care of a kidney specialist. This routine finding has practically saved his life. Jane, as she is now called is on full hormone treatment. She is living as a female. Her skin has softened, body hair reduced and her breasts have developed. She feels healthier and happier than she has ever felt before. She only feels sorry that she did not come to the clinic sooner. For the future she is contemplating facial cosmetic surgery and hair transplantation. Ultimately she would like to opt for gender re-assignment surgery.
To make the full transition from male to female is a big undertaking. The Albany Clinic have many years of experience. They can provide expert care and guidance for life.
